Account #1.
Our ime at Horse Creek was very enjoyable. I came with Red
Cloud's band of Oglala Lakota. We were at Horse Creek to
discuss an agreement with other tribes and the United States
Many other tribes, ike our alles, the Cheyenne and Arapaho,
came as well. There were also some of our enervies, lke the
Crow For the most part, times were peaceful at Horse Creek.
‘Some tribes, ke the Cheyenne, demonstrated their war
tactics. This was great entertainment for all tribes. At night. we
sang and danced while the children played by the creek. During
the day, our tribal leaders and the government would speak.
They were trying to come to an agreement Many of us
received gifts from the Army. These gfts mchided coffee,
tobacco, swords, and medals Finally, on the morning of
September 17, the leaders all signed the treaty. Tt was time to
load up our horses and return to our homelands,

One of the more important events during the Native
American Wars was the Fort Laramie Treaty of 1851 This was
also known as the Horse Creek Treaty, The treaty was an
agreement between the United States and several tribes of
the plains. Tribes represented include the Lokota, Dakota
Cheyenne, Arapaho, Arikara, Crow and Hidatsa. The treaty was
signed on September 17, 1851. The treaty set aside different
areas of land for the tribes. The United States agreed that land
involved in the treaty was owned by the natives. This treaty
wos also helpful for the United States. Natives agreed to let
settlers pass through their lands safely The passage setters
would take was called the Oregon Trail. The Arnay was also
allowed to build Forts along this trail Tn return, the govern=
ment would pay tribes fifty thousand dollars a year for Fifty
years The government did not honor this agreement,
