Book Reading " most commonly used strategy to improve reading fluency is the reading and rereading of familiar texts. So read aloud and also associated with the all the new development in fluent reading.

Before Reading a Story
A title and picture of a book can
you tell you a lot about the story.
You could look at a character’s
face to see how they are feeling, or
you may even get a sneak peek at
what happens to the character.

When reading a story, ask yourself the following
- Who is the story about?
- What is happening in the story?
- Where does the story take place?
- When does the story take place?
- Why did characters make certain decisions?
- How does this apply to me?
- Is this a thin question, meaning right there in
the text?
- Is this a thick question, meaning I need to
think and wonder?

■ In the following slides, you will work with a non-fiction text. Non-fiction means that
the information in the passage is true and informative.
■ The tutor can read through the passage or you can all take turns.
■ After reading for the first time, generate some of your own questions about the story
(see slide after passage for further directions)
■ After going through your own questions, answer the reading comprehension
questions.

Exit Ticket
■ My class is going to the movies on a field trip next week. We have to get
permission slips signed before we go. We also need to ask our parents if they will
drive to the movie theater. We are going to see a movie that tells the story from a
book we read. We love it when movies are made from books, and it is fun to
compare the movie to the book. I usually like the book better. We get to the movie
early so we can buy popcorn, while some of us buy candy and slushies too. We all
enjoy watching the movie. When we return to school, we talk about things that
were in the movie and the book. The movie and book are similar, but we all agree
that we like the book better though. Books let you picture the characters any way
you want to picture them while a movie does it for you. I like to use my
imagination to create my own version of the story.
