This pdf covers all the basics of significant figures and the conventions that must be followed for expressing numbers. Significant figures of a number in positional notation are digits in the number that are reliable and necessary to indicate the quantity of something.

As the number of significant figures increases, the more certain the measurement. As precision of a measurement increases, so does the number of significant figures. There are conventions that must be followed for expressing numbers so that their significant figures are properly indicated.
