Tutor Instructions
Ways to extend a lesson:
1. Have students write out their answers to discussion questions first (allow 2-3
minutes).
2. Have students share out their responses, each student taking a turn.
3. Share your own experiences as it relates to the lesson content or career information.
4. Build relationships in between lesson parts. Talk about favorite books, music, shows,
video games, movies.
5. Look up new or confusing words together online. Have students use these words in
sentences they write.
6. Have students explain the vocabulary words or key concepts in their own words.
Again, have them write it out first and then share.
7. Use the tab feature and share an appropriate YouTube video on the highlighted
career or lesson.
8. If you’re not familiar with Spanish, use Google translate to connect with your
language learners. They’ll love to hear you try to speak Spanish.
9. Take brain breaks and play a short game (approx. 5 minutes) related to the subject
matter.
10. Engage your students in conversation about their school, their lives, their jobs, their
family, their friends. Some students need just some direct questions about things
they enjoy to get them talking.

Times on slides are approximations. You might
need to spend less or more time, depending on
your students and session times.
If you have a shorter session (25-40 minutes),
you can alter the lesson to fit your time needs
with your students. Suggestions include:
1. Go through one “I Do” practice question
instead of two.
2. Go through one “We Do” practice question
instead of all three.
3. Keep discussion questions to 1-2 minutes.

Let’s Represent
Multiplication
We can represent multiplication in a
TON of ways!
Let’s look at some of the ways we
will practice today:
•Arrays
•Equal Groups using Skip Counting
•Number lines
•Area Models

Arrays
An array is an arrangement of objects showing
us rows and columns.
This represents grouped objects and helps us
Let’s take a look! →
This array shows groups of basketballs.
Let’s see how we can use this to represent
How many columns? 3 Hint: We can also represent this
How many items in each column? 4 as 4 rows of 3 balls!
Which multiplication sentence can we write Our multiplication sentence looks
from this array? different, but our answer is the
3 x 4 = 12 same! 4 x 3 = 12

Equal Groups & Skip
Counting
Skip counting is a skill we
can use to represent
How many pairs of slippers
are in this picture?
How many are in each pair?
Yes! Let’s count by twos to
find out how many slippers We see 4 groups with 2 in each
there are all together! group, so we could show 4 x 2 = 8
with these groups!
2 mins each

Number Lines
Number lines can help us show
multiplication by counting the
number of jumps and counting the
amount inside each jump!
In this number line, we see two arrows which represent our 2 jumps!
Inside each jump, there are 3 spaces.
2 jumps of 3 spaces is 6 spaces in all!
2x3=6

Area Models
Area models help us break
apart our multiplication to 2 groups of 10 1 group of 1
make problems easier.
We can see our ten’s place
and our one's place with an
area model. 20 x 4=80 1 x 4=4
What color is the tens
place? pink
80+4=84
What color is the ones?
Now what multiplication
sentence does this area
model represent? 4 x 21
